not swollen. crisis averted. Now I have to figure out another way of moving the pachysandra.

The ground-dwelling bees are almost certainly yellow-jackets; you were very lucky to get away with so few stings. Look in the yellow pages for professional bee removers/pest removers. Hire them to come kill the nest in the hand-hole you found. It's well worth the money. Then immediately dig up the pachysandra and dig over the area to eliminate the hole before any more have a chance to move in.
